That's great. I'm sure she will do a great job. By the way, thanks for the results. You have officially replaced the Herald for the website I go to first when I want to know what's really going on around town. I know you often defend the paper but really, they still have the story up on the site that gives early voting places for today's election.

TSC run-off too close to call

By Kevin Sieff, The Brownsville Herald
As of press time, the run-off election for the place 1 seat on the Texas Southmost College board was too close to call.

After the results from 19 of 38 precincts were added to early voting and mail-in results, Adela Garza led Dr. Jaime Silva 1378 to 1241.

The run-off came after neither Garza nor Silva received a majority of the vote in the May 10 election. Both candidates topped incumbent Jose Angel Herrera Jr. in the election.

Garza is a Brownsville businesswoman and a former Los Fresnos school board member. Silva is a Brownsville cardiologist.

For the last several months, both candidates have worked hard to court voters.

Prior to the May 10 contest, Garza told the Brownsville Herald she walked every neighborhood in Brownsville and visited voters in Los Fresnos and Port Isabel as well.

Silva said he had blanketed Brownsville with election advertisements promoting his candidacy.

The winner of the run-off will join Brownsville educator Rene Torres as the newest member of the board.

The Herald says that it is too close to call - apparently later than your posting. They say 1378 for Garza and 1241 for Silva.

A poll watcher and very trusted source provided me the numbers after they were done yesterday. I will clear up the discrepancy.

KRGV Channel website confirms Melissa's numbers.
100% of precincts reporting

Adela Garza 1,143
Jaime Silva 943

The Herald's bogus "too close to call" story doesn't even have the number of precincts reporting correct (19 of 38? those numbers were released early on at 8:00 with Adela at 784 and Silva behind at 734) and they botched yesterdays voting locations story on page 2. As far as I'm concerned, the Herald's credibility is zilch. Are Silva's people being drama queens or is it just the Heralds usual incompetence? Not sure, but they should be ASHAMED of themselves.

The Herald should apologize, and apologize profusely to the Garza family. Today should have been their moment of celebration, after a well deserved victory yesterday. This is just ridiculous.

Melissa and all,

I do not know if the Herald just got the numbers they posted out of their arse, but there were not 2500 voters with only half the precincts and mail-in reporting.

I have the final results in my hands have it with 36 of 38 precincts reporting. Mr. Roger Ortiz can better explain why it was 36 out of 38.

The numbers going precinct by precinct as far as I can tell add up to an Adela Garza victory with 1143 to Dr. Jaime Silva's 973.

The Herald is wrong and will have to have a correction later on today or tomorrow. The error was bigger than first thought on my blog.
