Mayor Ahumada Sends Out 'Urgent Message'

Hello all,

I received the belowed forwarded e-mail from the No Border Wall group. It was marked "Urgent Message from Mayor Ahumada." The "over take" comment kinda freaks me out, but I do believe that this upcoming City Commission meeting is a critical one.

Melissa

Subject: Re: Border Fence Event

Tuesday, July 1, City Commission meeting at 6 pm, is going to be very critical for the entire southwest border region. Please try to get as many to attend to quash the agreement with DHS to allow them to build the fence. If they are allowed to do this, then every other city between El Paso and Brownsville will be vulnerable and easy to over take. Brownsville is ground zero to build the fence, join me to stop the city commissioners from approving a contract negotiated in secret that allows building the fence.

Thanks,

Pat

I am not sure what to make of his e-mail - but I will say if you are opposed to the Wall and dislike the mayor - now is the time to put aside differences and stand with the mayor.

I would also suggest - flooding the city commissioners with e-mails expressing your concerns would be very helpful

Can there be public comments before the Commission votes on an item discussed in Executive Session? I don't remember from previous votes. I ask because according to the agenda, the border fence vote will come before the public hearing on the issue, which will come before the public comments section. I guess, the Mayor, as chair, can try to move the public hearing to before the vote, but I don't remember if he needs a vote for that.

And yes, the "over take" comment seems a bit much, but considering that Cabler compared negotiations with DHS to the colonies negotiating with the British, maybe the Mayor is just elaborating on the theme.

the mayor is full of bologna. He spinned this issue to his advantage to where he wants the whole commission to look bad. He failed to get Mexico on board to ge the weir dam going. He sued the Governor of Tampulipas. Do you really think they want to help him? I think Not!! There are some clear alternatives to a permanent wall and the city is looking into every possible alternative. Bottom line, the fence will be built no matter what. The Mayor knows this and has hurt true negotiations because he comes across like an arrogant jerk. The city is lucky that DHS is even considering alternatives despite the Mayor's "no class" character.

Commissioner Atkinson are you going to abstain due to conflict of interest because of your job at DHS?

Commissioner Atkinson:

Nice of you to chime in with your perspective as a concerned citizen and city commissioner. I am happy to see that you have an extensive vocabulary and do not need to resort to personal attacks and and childish insults.

You sir are the epitome of class. Your mother would be so pleased to see that you excel in your "ability to play well with others."

Is there a Mexican flag in the Mayor's office? I thought I saw one in an interview with Ch23; maybe it was his work office.

I hope the Commissioners aren't considering conceding, not on the eve of victory. Chertoff and the Bush Admin will be out of power in six months!
We've held them off this long. Don't compromise! The fence is political pandering of the worst kind. That's why its being rushed like this. If it weren't an election year, then the best action would be to compromise. The difference is, six months from now Bush and Chertoff will be history. Its been an endurance contest and we're finally in the home stretch.

They threaten us with deadlines and a permanent fence if we don't give up, but its with their last dying breath. 17 more weeks is all they have left. Just stall them, table it, but don't sign anything until the new Administration takes control. Then serious discussions can begin over satellite technology, motion sensors, 21st century immigration management that won't destroy our local environmental habitats & University.

Our land is precious. Both of my grandfathers fought for this country in WWII and many Americans have given their lives to protect it. Don't sign our land away so easily or cheaply, or for such a poor cause.

Obama said: "I think that the key is to consult with local communities, whether it's on the commercial interests or the environmental stakes of creating any kind of barrier. And the Bush administration is not real good at listening. That's not what they do well..... there may be areas where it makes sense to have some fencing. But for the most part, having border patrolled, surveillance, deploying effective technology, that's going to be the better approach."

If Brownsville can stall the Bush DHS for a few more months we may find a world of smarter alternatives become available, literally overnight. It's definitely worth a shot, in my humble opinion.

i heard that if we do allow for a removable wall, development can be done on the other side of the wall and the wall can eventually come off. (inside info)

it may be a good idea.

Can someone please tell me why if the reason the Mayor is flying to Mexico is to conduct negotiations on the border wall, why he keeps flying to Tampico? This decision is going to be made by Mexico City and not by any agency in Tampico. Tampico has lots of shrimp boats but has nothing to do with the government of Tamaulipas, or the national agency that would have authority of the Weir. Could this be one of those things that make you go hmmmmm?

for the same reason people fly to McAllen, Harlingen when visiting Brownsville, arrive at San Jose, Oakland when going to San Francisco, and fly to San Antonio Ariport when going to Austin and San Marcos Area, AND FLY TO Wichita when in reality want to visit Dallas/Fort Worth to answer the question above better, quicker destionation.
