Public Invited to Coffee with Herald Editor

IBC Bank is hosting a community coffee with Marcia Caltabiano-Ponce, new editor of The Brownsville Herald.

Coffee with Marcia begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday at IBC Bank, 1600 Ruben Torres Blvd.

I will say that today's Herald is a great edition. I've already noticed an improvement with the new editor's arrival.

Let's hope she'll have an EFFECT on proper grammar and word usage. Glaring headline error this morning--Dolly has no affect on Insurance attitudes. Geez.

Oh no. Valley & State headline bust. And, why is Insurance capitalized?

Overall, I enjoyed today's stories.

Research shows regular readers first turn to letters to the editor. She has significantly reduced the Sunday's letters to the editor section while giving Lucio JR a permanent place at the table.

Sunday is a big sell day for any newspaper. Making the one section people like to read smaller is not a smart move. What she has done is reduce the impact of the voice of the people. Without people you have no readership - without readership you have no paper.

I almost miss RB. I see Marcia's tenure at the Herald very short lived. I also see the Herald going to a Weds, Fri, Sunday editions only (or should i say additions - sorry could not resist).

All newspapers are on their way out. But when an editor cuts the section people actually read, you must question their competency.

A townhall meeting will not change her skills as an editor.

I will do my best to be there- god this means I will have to wear pants and shoes.

I went to look for the study on letters to the editor and found this instead - this editor has an interesting view of his readers.

I think we need to give her a chance. I've noticed some improvement, and major changes won't happen overnight.

BWC, what's up with your hand?

I see you do not read BV (lol) i finally had my carpal tunnel surgery - I am willing to see what she is about which is why I will do my best to be there on Wdenesday.

But come on, reducing the space available for readers' comments and then using the limited space for a politico, any politico, is not a smart move

I check BV several times a day! Sorry, forgot about the carpal tunnel!

Yes, I agree about the Viewpoints section. I would prefer to see commentary from Herald folks.

I know Marcia and she will do just fine.

But don't all you spin masters out there in Brownsville underestimate her for one minute. You don't want to get on her bad side.

Punishment for disagreement? Here? In the Valley? How would have thought it?

She's the grim reaper that Freedom brought in to cut the newsroom to the bone. Don't kid yourself into thinking she moved from her spot at the Monitor to the Herald for any other reason than Daniel needed some help in running off Herald newsroom diehards. But that's just one guy's opinion.
