off topic: the agenda for aug 26 special meeting of the city commission is now online. it's also the first public hearing in regards to a possible tax increase, which should be easier to support now that bnd has decreased their tax rate.

also, there's an item to require that two members of the commission request an item to be placed on the agenda in order for it to be approved for inclusion. i wonder if this will apply to the mayor. if it does, who will back him up when he wants something placed on the agenda? i don't quite yet buy the reasoning included in the packet. hopefully, it will be better explained at the meeting.

I didn't watch the meeting, so I may have missed any explanation. At the risk of arguing semantics, are commissioners, upon signing, really requesting the item placement or are they merely affirming their awareness of the item?

To me, there's little doubt this 2-sig item stems from the botched "Charter Review parameters" item of the last meeting. No one knew who placed this on the agenda, several commissioners claimed they were surprised it was there, and no one, staff included, fessed up to the placement.

Actually, Goza said at the meeting that he asked for the charter review item to be placed on the agenda.

I don't remember how specific Goza was about who placed the charter review parameters item, but last night he clearly stated that sometimes he absentmindedly placed agenda items under his name, instead of attributing them to the commissioners that ask him to place them.

The item passed, along with the trailer park permit, and without opposition from the Mayor because he left to go chaperone the Little League of Matamoros. He actually left a meeting that has been scheduled for weeks because at the last minute the Matamoros Mayor asked Ahumada to meet him with the kids. He even claimed that he had already put in hours of service to his communiity that day so it was okay, as if presiding over the meeting, a major duty of a mayor, was the superflous part of his service. His unprofessinalism was matched by Atkinson and Longoria who were struck with a case of juvenile giddiness and banter that clearly made others in the room uncomfortable.

An item of interest was the fact that maintenance for the Sports Park will cost more than anticipated. How much more? Well, Skip uncomfortably avoided saying how much more. Heck, he only said it would be different; the commission proded him to go as far as to say it was more.
