Search Unnecessary for UTB-TSC Athletic Director Post

From coaches to athletic directors, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College can't seem to keep them very long.

With Dan Balaguero, UTB-TSC's men's soccer coach, being named interim athletic director upon Dan Huntley's department, his time with the soccer team will likely suffer.

Balaguero has been the men's soccer coach for just one season, and already, he's having to wear an additional hat.

According to UTB-TSC, a search is currently under way for Huntley's replacement. However, is one really necessary?

UTB-TSC needs to appreciate the talent that's right before its eyes.

Ronnie Zamora, Director of Sports Information, Athletics Development and Marketing, is one of UTB-TSC's most dedicated employees. He's a Rio Grande Valley native. He lives and breathes Valley sports.

Forget the search. A jewel in the rough already exists.

Ditto. He is hard worker, loyal and a wonderful caring person.
I hope he is given the opportunity I am sure the community will be thrilled. We just have to wait and see if politics come into play. I sure hope not.

I would completely agree. Ronnie and Rene Torres would both be perfect for the job. Rene is obviously conflicted now that hes on the Board of Trustees. Ronnie should be considered.

Ronnie Zamora? Jesus freakin' Christ. Isn't he part of the problem along the Texas-Mexico Border? Isn't he just another dickless bureaucrat who's played the Safe Game, like my friends Eddie Campirano and Bill Young and Roger Ortiz. These people have not one ounce of creativity or anything that would show locals there is new oxygen in town! I remember Ronnie from my days at the Herald, when he replaced Jerry McHale as Sports Editor and soon began boring the entire readership. Ronnie is not the answer here, as would not be Don Pedro - a cartoon I always believed had been fashioned after Ronnie Zamora.

Well, UTB is certainly a veritable mine for all things rough. And if it's true that he's "just another dickless bureaucrat," then he will have finally risen to the level of his incompetency.

Ronnie deserves the opportunity. He's extremely talented, and he loves Valley sports. Local talent is rare, and many with it leave the Valley behind. Ronnie kept it here, and that's a fight in itself.

You wrote: "UTB-TSC needs to appreciate the talent that's right before its eyes."

UTB-TSC is inanimate.

Buildings, organizations, etc., etc. do not have "eyes". Didn't you mean to write: "UTB-TSC administrators need to appreciate the talent that's right before their eyes."

And Ronnie Zamora is still a hapless bureaucrat who likely would have left the RGV if he'd had what you label "talent," label it by the way so cavalierly and as if the dolt needs your blessing. Stop being such a goody-goody. It's annoying...

There are many talented folks who choose to stay in the Valley, because this is their home.

Blessing? No one needs my blessing, and I never gave it.

Why do you insist on always reading more into my words than their intended meaning?

You are a local talent who chose to leave. Nothing's wrong with that, even though you still choose to write about the Valley.

Attribution of human qualities to inanimate objects to illustrate a contextual situation.

Isn't that personification?

Reading more into your words? No, not reading "more" into your words. They are fairly simple words you use, perhaps out of deference to your particular readership. But who knows? I believe your point is that Ronnie Z should get this particular position. And it appears that you have called him a "Jewel" in the rough. The Ronnie Zamora I know would be better classified as being a "Golfer" in the rough. My drummer Jerry McHale would be the Dude for that job, as would our lyricist Dave Handelman. Ronnie Zamora? Obscenity! M*i*s*s Y*o*u*...

Kurgan,

...In certain contexts, that would be so. My point went to "clarity," which is what the sentence (and BlogginAll readers) deserved. Personification is better left to poetry. But then, maybe MZ's readers don't give a damn. They are a blind-obedience lot, is the word in the streets. MZ, however, is sumthin' else, as sparking a Babe as I've ever had the pleasure to meet. She reminds me of a young Sally Field, or my beautiful daughter Gabrielle at age 32 - 10 years from now. Did you make the correction on your Blog, Kurgster? That was an E-5, error on the Third Baseman.

Brownsville is a border version of western appalachia - incest (literally and politically) at all levels. The law of gravity is suspended here because cream does not rise to the top. Bad roots produce bad fruit.

They didn't even give him the interim position. I think that says it all.

I understand all of you that support Ronnie. He is a nice guy. But, if by chance, he does not get the job...please don't set up the new person to fail. That won't solve anything and only perpetuate the problems that have plagued the athletics program.

I don't think folks want anyone in that position to fail.

Ronnie is a nice guy, yes. He's also qualified and knows UTB-TSC and Valley sports like the back of his hand.

The main problem for Ronnie is that he is not from somewhere else!

Everyone, please take the time to email all UTB/TSC board members and express your support for a qualified son of Brownsville for this position, Ronnie Zamora.

Let's make this a grass roots effort to show we have good people here who can make a difference.

What exactly qualifies him to be an athletic director? Writing about sports? Has he ever coached? I agree that a native son is great, but knowing valley sports because you write about them does not qaulify you for such a position. Sorry to disagree. Good luck to whoever receives the appointment.

Do you really want people who don't know the applicant pool and who don't know the demands of the job to get involved in the process. Allow the powers that be to do their job and hire the most QUALIFIED person. No matter there ethnicity.

To anon:
The position of AD is not normally a coaching position. It is an Administrative job.
Google it
The powers that be are the ones who keep bringing people from England, Italy, Canada etc. to our small school. They need the input of the double taxed people of Cameron County, they work for us! Hold down the expense of relocating another bunch of losers, who will only stay for a year or two, or until they get a better offer from a bigger school. Ronnie is a person who can "Direct" and administer the Athletic Department for the good of the school and the community.
No one is forcing you to contact anyone, but I will and so will many others.

YES , we do it all the time for jobs that hold much more dire consequences, it's called campaigning.

If he wants the job, give him a chance. How could it hurt?

Can anyone explain why they gave the interim position to one of the so called "international losers" and not to Ronnie. I am curious to hear. Does anyone think there might be a reason for that???? I am all ears.

My prediction...Ronnie Zamora will not be the next Director of Athletics at UTB/TSC.

Still waiting on an explanation of why, if Ronnie is so qualified and knows valley sports like the back of his hand, he wasn't named the interim. Surely one of you has an answer for this inquiry. Or, maybe you don't want to admit the truth. He will not be athletic director.
