Hurricane Ike's Impact on SPI

Where's our beach? South Padre Island is expected to see 8-12 ft. waves as Hurricane Ike makes its way to the Texas Coast. These photos were taken in the early AM. Click on photos for larger view.

Will there be less beach when the storm surge subsides?

We had a beach erosion problem prior to Ike. I'm sure the it will be worse once Ike subsides. The NWS has predicted more erosion, but its magnitude will be unknown Ike says goodbye.

These photos are great! Thanks Melissa

They show the need for a continuous dune line on SPI. The water is rushing in through the gaps and wrapping around the existing dunes. I hope the residents and property owners embrace the continuous dune line and help us avoid this type of damage in the future.

Pat - the sand is being redistributed right now - only time will tell where it ends up.

Good to see you on here, Elizabeth. We greatly appreciate your work -- and that of your students -- on SPI.

Talk about gaps, y'all should have seen the river of water washing down that cool little wash out that has been created(on purpose) between Tiki and Key Largo up north

off topic: The agenda for the Sept 15 Special Meeting doesn't have a public comment section, even though there are two action items after the public hearings--not that that should matter.

Also, there's no packet yet for the Sept 16 Regular Meeting, which includes three interesting items that I hope someone can explain:

13. Consideration and ACTION on Resolution Number 2008-078 to conform staff
purchasing limits to State Law and directing revision of Purchasing Policy and
Procedures Manuel Policy. (John E. Chosy – Assistant City Attorney)

15. Consideration and ACTION on Resolution Number 2008-081 authorizing
amendments to multi-use stadium lease, reimbursement, and stadium
construction and management agreements. (Commissioner Camarillo)

16. Consideration and ACTION on Resolution Number 2008-082 authorizing
publication of notice of intention to issue certificates of obligation.
(Commissioner Camarillo)

By the way, with the exception of the workshop, items placed by commissioners only have one name. If they're going to require two signatures, they should place the names of both commissioners that requested the item.
