Mayor Opposes Zoning That Allow World's Gym to Become a Bar

Press release

Date: January 6, 2009

Due to the upcoming State Legislative Session and preparation for funding requests for Brownsville's needs and projects that required my travel to Austin, Texas, my absence from tonight's City Commission meeting is necessary and I extend my apologies for not being there. As mayor, I feel it is of the utmost importance to work on the citizens' behalf in preparation for the upcoming legislative session in order to make sure our city needs are heard and taken into account. I feel that working with and through the Texas Border Coalitiion and Brownsville Chamber Interagency Commitee, as Chairman of the MPO TXDOT Committee and as Ex-officio PUB Board member to ensure funding requests for the City / PUB desalinization plant, city roads and maintenance funding are appropriated during this next legislative session along with mass transportation needs, and that serious consideration be given towards funding a pilot program for electric generation in order help keep our citizens' future utility bills low make this time well spent in Austin.

I also want it known for the record that I oppose the approval of the zoning that will allow World Gym to be converted into a bar, based on the fact that it is within 1,000 feet of a school or school facility where many children depend on us to protect them from drivers who are most likely to be under the influence of alcohol when they leave a bar.

Thanks,
Mayor Pat Ahumada

I am in total agreement. What was also learned tonight at the City Commission meeting is, they will be allowed to serve drinks at noon while children are using the pool.

This is a tragedy waiting to happen. And for the record World shut down because they neglected their cliente, not because of Gold's as alleged by Longoria.

A lot of people chose World over Golds when Powerhouse closed because of the racketball courts, and steamroom.

The owners at World chose to allow the equiptment to go unrepaired, and the locker room to become a place for inappropriate conduct. They allowed the lockers to become broken and tile to deteriorate.

My point is they sunk their own business. We do not need a bar this close to the BISD pool. Especially when the owners already sunk one business into the ground.

Shame on the City Commission for sending such a bad message to our children.

And for the record, I will be informing Gold's I will be canceling my new contract with them. They lied about working TV's on the treadmills, and some of the treadmills in the media center are broken or dangerous because of cuts or cracks in the treads.

Brownsville needs a good gym which is locally owned by people who believe you serve the clientele and not the corporate owners in some far off never never land.

Hey Bobby, now that you have had a chance to comment on this and Dalls gay districts. Why don't you take the time to comment on something that is 17 days overdue?

from the Herald

"In a separate decision, the City Commission was unanimous in allowing a business at 645 Milpa Verde to sell alcohol. The business is a drive-through store and Lucino Rosenbaum III made the request. The Planning and Zoning Commission also recommended approval."

Wasn't he charged with assault last year?
Doesn't he have a drug conviction on his record?

Yet, they approved this request...
What gives?

Perhaps it is that business across town are folding and people are moving away.
A local businessman actually wants to expand and invest in the area. Maybe we should give it a chance. Ya think? Or lets vote to stifle local entrepreneurship in favor of the chain liquor stores.

Rack Daddy's is less than a block further away from Hudson and the pool. Have they had any problems?
